Why is redecorating your home so hard to do? Why are people so reluctant to start? Is it because it takes a lot of money, time, energy and knowledge (and lack thereof)? Sure. But the truth is, it is something else. Something much deeper. A human fear!
A fear of doing something wrong, of breaking things beyond repair. Of "wasting" money on the wrong things. Of trying and failing.
If you grew up with fastidious parents, relatives or friends, then you'll probably have an innate fear (it's actually an ingrained/programmed fear, because you are not born with it, it just feels like it is) of messing things up. And attracting negative comments or even worse, consequences.
You are not making any house decisions from your adult, empowered self. You are making decisions from your 7 year-old self. Or better yet, your 7 year-old self is making the decisions for you. The one who learned that any mistakes could attract the loss of love and protection. It is making decisions from a survival pov.
So, of course, you are going to see this as a fad. Working on your home? With an interior designer? Biggest fad of all.
Why change something when the current state of your home would do?
Why change your home into one that literally lights you up? One that you deserve.
Why risk your safety, your comfort zone, when staying small, just the same, will do?
Why change something that isn’t broken?
When keeping those beige walls and brown carpets means we are safe from family and friends' (or social media) negative opinions?
When what we really want is an explosion of colours and patterns and fabrics that show how much joy and light is in our hearts? That shows our personality and who we are. That feels very vulnerable and scary.
I get it. I had a similar journey I went through while growing up (and during my career). So, I get how scary it can feel and be. This is a natural human emotion. A human reaction. There is nothing wrong with you. This is just another way that our (subconscious) trauma shows up and runs the show.
But I’ve also seen the other side of things.
What happens when clients are brave enough to change things anyway. And we create magical spaces together. Places that light them up (literally). It’s the most rewarding part of my job – to see their faces light up when they see their new homes.
Is it scary? Hell yes.
Is it hard? Of course.
Is it worth it? Abso– freaking-lutely.
Like all great things, your home could help you become a better version of yourself.
Remember, you don’t have to do it alone. I will be there every step of the way, helping you and guiding you so that you make the best decisions for yourself and your future home.
