Best of Clerkenwell Design Week - Part 1

Every year around this time, something exciting is happening in London - The Clerkenwell Design Week. With so many new products, designs and brands this year, it's no wonder that this event is rapidly becoming more and more popular.

First things first, if this is the first time you've ever heard of Clerkenwell Design Week, know that it is an independent design festival taking place in London. It's an event that happens every year for 2-3 days and it is (as their slogan says) full of "jam-packed design". The festival gathers not only amazing design exhibitions but also design showrooms, shops, coffee shops, restaurants and architectural studios.

Luckily for me, I had a bit more time on my hands than I had last year, so I managed to see all of the main exhibitions. Inspiration was emanating from every corner. As you know by now, I always share everything I find with you, but sadly, I cannot fit everything into just one post. So naturally, it will be covered in 2 parts!

Feeling lucky? Of course you do. So let's begin!

Best furniture from Clerkenwell design Week Part 1

1.  ELECTRA SIDEBOARD by MAX KASYMOV

An interesting sideboard inspired by the 1960s and one that purposely resembles that era's first radio design sets. Although we all know that the '60s interiors always had a pop of colour here and there, this particular piece of furniture comes in soft and earthy colours (hence the wood finish touch). My guess? So that it is more versatile in today's interiors and their colour scheme. Either way, pretty much timeless.

2. DARE STUDIO

A wonderful surprise for me this year. Even though they were exhibiting last year as well, I felt that I truly appreciated them this year: beautiful chairs, sofas side tables, and an even more so desk (Maya Desk). However, they've won my heart with their inviting armchairs. I would have sat in them too, had I not been distracted by other gorgeous things. That is the problem with these design exhibitions, there is always something else to see, and discover and so little time.

3. CURIOSA & CURIOSA

This lovely company does some really lovely lights with different combinations of hand-blown glass and hand-made wood or other materials. Their products are more beautiful in real life. These photos don't do them justice.

4. CATELLANI AND SMITH

I have to mention this stunningly simple yet sophisticated LED floor lamp called Lederam F1. It's made out of multiple metals: aluminium disc and nickel joints. What I particularly like about this design is the small footprint it has, meaning you can easily place it anywhere in your room and it wouldn't take up much space. Of course, it would have to be next to a wall so that the LED could work its magic and double the light volume.

5. BERT FRANK

By far THE BEST & MY FAVOURITE STAND from the whole Clerkenwell Design event - a real show stopper! Truly an oasis of calmness among the busy exhibition (might as well quote them on it) the set design was very well thought out in advance. Extremely photo-friendly I might add too.

I love it when designers think of their set design in such a way that it's very easy for visitors to take stunning and memorable photos. I'm just saying... I noticed what you did there Bert Frank. A little bit goes a long way, so thank you!

So...just realised (again) that there is no possible way I could cover this year's Clerkenwell Design Exhibition in 2 parts (let alone in one as I originally thought - Ha, I never learn)! Having had this epiphany, there might (surely) be a part 3 because I don't want you to miss out on anything good.

That being said, Clerkenwell Design Week is an amazing experience, one that must be tried at least once. Have you been to CDW?
